You won't find a bigger fan of Alfie than me. Him being on the team probably moulded me into the fan I am today.

However, I am not a fan of all of this pregame retirement stuff. It seems oddly forced and fake. I don't mind the one day contract thing (silly as it is), but the warming up with the team, taking ceremonial draws, ranting with the Spartan naked guy, and whatever they have planned seems a little silly and over the top. We (and Alfie) were robbed of a final game victory lap due to contract disputes. Melnyk seems to be trying a last straw to be "the good guy" with these antics. All fans will buy into because we love Alfie, but it's really artificial.

To me the next and final Alfie moment will be his sweater retirement. (If they sneakily do that tonight, then forget my rant.) That is the only time it's appropriate for him to be out there with the team and garner a lot of attention. Being the first modern era player to have their jersey retired is going to be a special thing.

With all that said, Alfie had a brilliant career and it was an honour watching the guy play. Still miss him in every Sens game.

He gave everything to us. Even though he took a discounts contract in the pass, the team still tried to be cheap on him. I would have done the same thing he did and bail. SENS did another bad move. This team has a bad reputation now. You can't do that to great players. STUPID

Alfie deserves alot more than this soirée.

I think the pre-game skate idea is fantastic. It will mean a lot to Alfredsson, it will mean a lot to the current Senator players to have him on the ice with them one more time, and it will mean a lot to the fans.

For the fans, they will get to see #11 on the ice one last time. Alfredsson's last time skating during an NHL game will be as an Ottawa Senator, not a Detroit Red Wing. Symbolic yes, but I think it means a lot.

Kudos to the NHL for being accommodating and allowing this to happen. It has never been done before.

life's too short man ...... celebrate what you can, when you can.... I don't see this as a 'sucking-up moment, more so a 'making things right moment'.

when was the last time this city had a bonafide sports hero???? Tony Gabriel??? Russ Jackson??

I see no issue at all with celebrating his retirement .... then his sweater raising. He was the face of sports in Ottawa for 15 years.....

PRAISE ALFIE

[EDIT] ..... I hope the video mantage shows the hit on Tucker incident and the fake stick throw ...... classics

no doubt he was good for OTT in the big picture

but certainly that was pathetic of him; even sens fans would agree that wasnt his best moment as a captain...pretty unsportsmanlike.

i dont care about the dirty hits; but shooting the puck at one of the better D man of our time after the period was over - and the sens were losing the cup; not his best moment.

I agree it wasn't the best moment. He wanted to motivate the team, they lsot that game 6-2, and he scored both goals.

Not an excuse though

On the bold, should it matter who he does it to? Does it make it worse that it occured to a better defense man?

Nice of you to post some coloured film of our Stanley Cup final in 2006-07, after we won 3 playoff series.

I'm sure you also enjoy watching the grainy, black and white footage from 1967 of ol' Bluey's last appearance.

And if you want to see the Leafs win 3 series, just check out the highlight films from all their playoff activity from 2001 to 2014.

I'm sure when Dion retires, you'll post some nice footage of him patting Lucic on the back as he scored the goal that started the comeback in the greatest game 7 collapse in NHL history in 2013.

Ahhh, memories......

Will there be more Senator fans posting on here today as they look forward to a special day for the greatest player to ever play for the team....or more pathetic Leaf fans that have nothing better to do than to come and troll on this thread.

Sadly, my guess is the latter.

actually, we kind of expected you to stay out of a thread that has nothing to do with you or your team.

i'm sure when tucker retired, there weren't any sens fans in your thread talking poop

Congrats to Alfie. Yes, from a Leafs fan.

On a side note.....I stopped taking this article seriously when our host blogger included Curtis Joseph in his "entourage of buffoonery" (can't deny Domi, Corson and Tucker.....although not like there were not comparable dance partners on the Sens at the time).

Jared, you dipped into "Garth's Corner" country, and allowed your home-town bias to influence you to the point where it ruined an otherwise decent article. Please, don't let it happen again.
